Restoring Hope to Flood-Affected Households in Nkhata Bay District
With financial support from AfriAus ILEAC in Australia, Youth Empowerment Towards Development (YETOD) provided emergency relief to over 40 households affected by the April 2024 floods in Nkhata Bay District, Malawi. The organisation distributed essential food items, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and sanitation supplies to vulnerable families in Senior Chief Malanda and Traditional Authority Fukamalaza. The initiative highlighted the importance of locally led humanitarian action and strong partnerships in restoring hope, promoting community resilience and supporting disaster recovery.

Heavy rainfall on 11–12 April 2024 affected 127 households in Nkhata Bay District, Malawi. Some homes collapsed, families were displaced, and communities urgently needed food, shelter, sanitation supplies and recovery support.
With financial support from AfriAus ILEAC in Australia, Youth Empowerment Towards Development (YETOD) implemented the first phase of the Nkhata Bay Floods Recovery Project, providing essential humanitarian assistance to more than 40 flood-affected households. The response focused on supporting vulnerable families in Senior Chief Malanda and Traditional Authority Fukamalaza.
As part of the emergency response, YETOD distributed essential relief supplies, including food items, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and sanitation items, to help affected households meet their immediate needs and improve their health, safety and well-being.
The food items helped address urgent household food needs, while PPE and sanitation supplies supported personal hygiene, improved sanitary conditions and helped reduce health risks associated with flooding and displacement. This assistance provided much-needed relief to families struggling with the impacts of the disaster.
The project demonstrated the importance of locally led humanitarian action. YETOD was recognised as the first and only district-based organisation reported to have responded at that stage. The Nkhata Bay District Commissioner commended the organisation’s efforts and encouraged continued support for affected families.
Traditional leaders also identified agricultural seeds as a priority for long-term recovery. Providing seeds and other agricultural inputs would help families restore their livelihoods, improve food security and strengthen their resilience to future disasters.
The response showed that local organisations can act quickly and effectively because they understand community needs and work closely with local leaders. It also highlighted the importance of partnerships such as the one between YETOD and AfriAus ILEAC in strengthening emergency response, community resilience and sustainable recovery efforts.
